A Chance for Children Foundation

WHY:
77th Street Area will unveil their Little Free Library

LAPD 77th Street Area in conjunction with a local non-profit, A Chance for Children, have partnered to establish a Little Free Library inside the 77th Street Area Station Lobby.  This Library functions as educational and outreach tool to children and community members in 77th Area. The Library builds a sense of community, promotes literacy and the love of books.

The Little Free Library is a gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories.  In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book and bring back another book to share. 77th Street Area’s Little Free Library is registered in a National Registry where community members can locate the Library online.  All books are free for children of all ages and will be listed by age group reading levels.

The Little Free Library will have a positive influence on community quality of life and provides a place for neighbors to meet and get to know each other through “community in the station programs”.  LAPD Cadets will serve as stewards of the library teaching them important life skills, ownership of a project, and the importance of community.  Additionally, police officers will be involved in providing book reading programs at the station with local schools.  To learn more about the opportunities with the Little Free Library you can visit lfl.org .  The books will be re-stocked through generous donations of non-profit organizations, community members and police officers.

Members of the media interested in attending should contact Sergeant Alejandra Fiallos or Officer Joel Morales with the 77th Street Area Community Relations Office at 213-485-4285.
