Slow Down and Watch Out for Pedestrians! NA14017rh

February 5, 2014

Life in Los Angeles is hectic and chaotic.  Most of us are in a constant race to get to work, home or other places.  Wherever we are going, we are all responsible for traffic safety.  The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) would like to remind all community members to drive and walk responsibly when using the streets of Los Angeles.

The following tips are recommended to ensure traffic safety:

•    Drive at a reasonable speed and slow down.  Take into consideration the prevailing conditions, such as weather, roadway conditions and traffic flow of vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles.
•    Yield to others when they have the right of way, especially to pedestrians and bicyclists who are more vulnerable to serious injuries when involved in a traffic collision.
•    When crossing a street, use the crosswalk and adhere to the pedestrian control signal (the box generally located under the tri-light signal).  Only enter a crosswalk when the pedestrian control signal is displaying “WALK.”  Do not enter a crosswalk when facing a flashing or solid “WAIT”, “DON”T WALK” or a red, upraised hand.

On February 7, 2014, the LAPD will have 30 officers deployed to conduct traffic enforcement for speed, right of way and pedestrian violations.  It is the goal to raise awareness, educate the public and improve traffic safety.

Funding for the enforcement details is provided by Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  We can all help make our streets safer, please report Drunk Drivers – Call 911.  For further information, please contact Officer Don Inman, Traffic Coordination Section, at (213) 486-0703.
