LAPD Reinstates Public Crime Data on www.LAPDOnline.org NR24247ma

August 29, 2024

Update is a result of Data Modernization and an Ongoing Commitment to Transparency

Los Angeles: As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and efforts to modernize the information we provide to the public, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is pleased to announce the reinstatement of the public posting of crime data, effective August 28, 2024.

This reinstatement comes after LAPD transitioned to an updated system which creates profiles that now offer a statistical comparison of crime data. The new crime data allows law enforcement and the public to have a more accurate understanding of crime statistics and trends in local communities and the City. These profiles provide a statistical comparison of crime data for Homicides, Rapes, Robberies, Aggravated Assaults, Motor Vehicle Theft, Theft from Motor Vehicle, and Theft. This will offer crucial insights for both the community and the LAPD.

The reinstated data includes 4-week period comparisons and Year-to-Date (YTD) totals for 2024, integrating data from both the FBI’s Summary Reporting System (SRS) and the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). Year-to-Date totals for 2023 and 2022 are also provided for reference; however, while the 4-week periods can be compared, the YTD totals cannot be directly compared due to different reporting standards.

Until March 2024, the LAPD reported crime data following the FBI’s SRS Standard, which adheres to the “Hierarchy Rule.” This method counts only the most serious offense per victim in single and multiple offense incidents. Beginning in May 2024, the LAPD transitioned to a blended reporting method incorporating SRS and NIBRS data standards. Unlike SRS, NIBRS counts each type of offense once per incident, regardless of the number of victims or offenses attributed to each victim. This shift significantly changes how crime data is recorded and reported.

As additional data becomes available to upload into the system, including arrest statistics, crime data will be expanded to offer a more comprehensive overview of crime trends in Los Angeles.
