Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW) Suspect Armed with a Machete NR11498an

The officer involved in the below shooting which occurred on October 22, 2011 has been identified as Police Officer II Jessie Hinchman, 11 years and 4 months with the Department.

Los Angeles: A machete wielding man slashed a victim multiple times, commandeered a food truck, and crashed the truck before being subdued by police.

On Saturday morning October 22nd just before 4:00 a.m., officers from Olympic Division responded to a call of an ADW in progress in the 3900 block of Beverly Blvd. As officers were arriving on scene they observed a food truck that had just crashed into several parked vehicles one block east of the radio call.  As the officers approached the crash scene they observed two individuals inside of the food truck.  One of the suspects began to exit the food truck armed with a machete knife covered in blood. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the machete numerous times but the suspect would not drop the machete. Officers deployed a Taser in an attempt to control the suspect but the Taser had no effect. The suspect continued to disregard the officer’s orders to drop the machete and as a result an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The second individual in the truck was covered in blood and had multiple cuts and wounds. That victim was transported to a local hospital as well and is listed in stable condition. No officers were injured during the incident.

The LAPD Force Investigation Division responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting. The ADW investigation will be handled by investigators from Olympic Detectives.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.

Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.
