Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved-Shooting (OIS) that occurred early Monday morning.

On March 30, 2020, around 1:25 a.m., Topanga Patrol Division officers responded to a radio call of an OIS involving an off-duty LAPD officer, in the 22000 block of Cass Avenue. Upon their arrival, Topanga officers met with the involved off-duty officer. The off-duty officer, later identified as Police Officer II Jimmy Soliman, Serial No. 39370, assigned to West Los Angeles Division, stated that while inside his residence, he heard noises outside. When he looked outside his bedroom window, he observed a white Dodge Charger parked in front of his residence. The Dodge Charger was stopped in the middle of the street with the driver and passenger doors open. Soliman heard additional noises coming from the side of his residence, which leads to his rear yard. Soliman walked outside to his front yard and observed two male suspects. One of the suspects produced a handgun, resulting in an OIS. Both suspects fled the location. Soliman was not injured during the incident. A search of the area and local hospitals did not reveal any victims of a gunshot wound.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with the LAPD’s policies and procedures. Additionally, representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office who responded to the scene will review the subsequent FID investigation; evidence collected and witness statements to determine if the force used by the officer(s) violated any criminal laws.
