Officer-Involved Shooting Occurs in Southwest NR13424CJ

September 13, 2013

Updated: The officer involved in the below incident has been identified as Police Officer II S. Glick.

Los Angeles:  On Wednesday, September 11, 2013, around 7:50 p.m., LAPD Southwest Area uniformed and plain clothes officers, along with gang detectives responded to a radio call of a shooting in progress at Vermont Avenue and 43rd Street.  When the initial officers arrived on scene, they saw a male suspect holding a handgun to the head of a female inside a laundromat located in the 1000 block of West 43rd Street.

Officers carefully deployed around the suspect and attempted to give commands to the suspect.  The suspect refused to comply with the officer’s commands.  The male turned toward the officers and began to approach them.  One officer fired a bean bag rifle striking the suspect.  Another officer observed the suspect attempting to arm himself and shot at the suspect with his service weapon.  The suspect was not hit by the gunfire.

The suspect then sat down while the female that was with him knelt to hug him.  The officers approached the suspect and attempted to gain compliance from him, but were unsuccessful.  The supervisor at the scene ordered the use of the TASER on the suspect striking both the male and the female.  They were taken into custody without further incident.  A handgun was recovered from the ground in the immediate area of where the two individuals were taken into custody.  There were no officers injured during the incident.

Force Investigation Division responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy, which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.

Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.
