Community Clean-Up and Picnic

November 3, 2000

Los Angeles – On Saturday, November 4, 2000, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Ninth Council District and the Newton Area Community Police Station, in association with many police sponsored organizations serving the Newton Area, will join with residents in a massive clean up effort to rid the neighborhood of graffiti and other unsightly debris.

The clean up location will consist of an area bordered by 41st Street on the North, 48th Street on the South, Hooper Street on the West, and Long Beach Boulevard on the East. Volunteers and community groups taking part in the clean up are asked to meet at Ross Snyder Park, 1501 East 41st Street, where coordination of the event will begin at 8:00 a.m.

After the clean up, all the participants are invited to a community picnic at Ross Snyder Park, where lunch and recreational activities for the entire family will be provided free of charge. During the picnic, Newton Area Senior Lead Officers and community leaders will discuss various ways in which residents can keep their neighborhood clean and become involved in crime prevention activities.

Guest speakers for the event will include Roderick Wright, State Assembly Member, Council Member Rita Walters, LAPD Chief of Police Bernard C. Parks, Captain Thomas Maeweather, Commanding Officer Newton Area, and various community leaders.

The media is invited to attend this fun filled day and take the opportunity to see community members and the Police Department work hand in hand in an effort to beautify the community and improve the quality of life in Newton Area.
